Last Night at the Alamo is a 1983 American black-and-white independent film directed and co-produced by Eagle Pennell, written and co-produced by Kim Henkel and starring Sonny CarlDavis and Lou Perryman.

Pennell received a $25,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Southwest Alternate Media Project in Houston provided free office space and film equipment. Production began in May 1982 at an old bar in East Houston and lasted for three and one-half weeks. The bar where the film was shot was still in business so daily shooting had to finish by 4 p.m. It is believed that Henkel finished the film as Pennell was having issues with alcohol and drugs and quit showing up.

The film was shown at the New York Film Festival in 1983 and received mostly good reviews. The movie then played the USA Film Festival in 1984. It won the Special Jury Prize: Dramatic at theSundance Film Festival. Last Night at the Alamo started distribution in a limited commercial release in July 1984.

Flannery O’Connor bought this Hotpoint refrigerator in 1956 after she sold the TV rights to “The Life You Save May Be Your Own.” Apparently she was not very into the eventual adaptation. But her food was cold.

from a letter o’connor wrote on dec. 10, 1956:

I have just learned via one of those gossip columns that the story I sold for a TV play is going to be put on in the spring and that a tap-dancer by the name of Gene Kelly is going to make his tellyvision debut in it. The punishment always fits the crime.

I think it’s channel 5 and people tell me you can’t get it very good here, so I hope you will absolutely be in front of your set this time at the correct hour, as I must have some representative there to give Kelly a good leer every now and then for me. …It will probably be appropriate to smoke a corncob pipe while watching this.

Everything Will Be OK is a 2006 animated short film by Don Hertzfeldt. It is the first chapter of a three-part story about Bill, the protagonist. Hertzfeldt released the second film in the series, titled I am so proud of you, in 2008.

The main character and a few of the film’s scenarios were developed from sketches and webcomics Hertzfeldt did in 1999-2000 for his website while working on other film projects. The film tells the story of Bill, whose daily routines, perceptions, and dreams are illustrated onscreen via multiple split-screen windows. Though his life seems mundane, he has trouble remembering things and the sights and sounds of the world are sometimes overwhelming. His life is narrated in several humorous and dramatic anecdotes, very gradually growing darker and terrifying as he appears to be suffering from a possibly fatal mental disorder (and has been receiving treatment for it for quite some time). The split-screen windows and layered audio tracks slowly battle for attention on screen and begin to smother Bill. The film illustrates the struggle many people have with mental illness, in the inherent difficulty in deciding which muddled thought or distracted perception is most important and should be paid attention to. Meanwhile, Bill is suddenly faced with the possible end of his life.

The story is told with Don Hertzfeldt’s signature style of animated stick-figure line drawings. However, in this film, there are often multiple frames on the screen at once, each in an irregular white enclosure, all against a background of pure black. Some animated still photographs are also incorporated inside certain windows, as well as a handful of the colorful special effects and experimental film techniques that Hertzfeldt first utilized in his 2005 film, The Meaning of Life. As with all his films, no computers were used in creating the picture; all of the split-screen effects were captured in-camera on his 35mm animation camera through careful multiple-exposure photography.

There is no dialogue spoken directly by the characters (with the exception of some of Bill’s hallucinations, which arguably don’t count as characters). The film and Bill’s thoughts are entirely narrated in great detail. The deadpan narrator refers to Bill only in the third person and describes what all the characters say.
